Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated two significant bridges on Al Khail Road, at Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1, as part of its comprehensive Al Khail Road Development Project. These bridges, with a combined length of 1,350 metres and capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour, are set to alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel efficiency towards Jebel Ali. This key milestone is part of RTA’s ongoing infrastructure improvements across seven strategic locations on Al Khail Road, which has now reached an 80% completion rate.
Key Details of the Al Khail Road Development Project
The ambitious Al Khail Road Development Project involves constructing 3,300-metre-long bridges and widening lanes across a stretch of 6,820 metres. These improvements span areas like Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, and Jumeirah Village Circle, and are designed to reduce travel time by 30% and boost road capacity by 19,600 vehicles per hour.
The project’s objective is to enhance traffic efficiency by resolving overlaps at flyovers and facilitating continuous traffic flow. This is in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, to elevate Dubai’s infrastructure to meet the needs of urban growth.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated, “This project will support the growing demand on Dubai’s road network and will streamline connections between Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.”
New Bridge Openings at Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1
The 700-metre-long bridge at Zaa’beel features three lanes, with a capacity to handle 4,800 vehicles per hour. It links traffic from Zaa’beel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road, enhancing travel towards Jebel Ali.
The second bridge, located at Al Quoz 1, stretches 650 metres and has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. This two-lane bridge connects Al Meydan Street to Al Khail Road, improving traffic flow toward Jebel Ali and Business Bay.
#RTA opened two major bridges on Sunday, 15 September, as part of Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project. Site Improvements Along Al Khail Road
The project encompasses a total of seven key sites:
- Site 1 in Al Jaddaf: A 700-metre, three-lane bridge connects Zaa’beel Palace Street to Al Khail Road, increasing capacity by 4,800 vehicles per hour. Surface road expansions also improve connectivity toward Sheikh Zayed Road.
- Site 2 at Meydan: A 610-metre, two-lane bridge, serving traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road, will enhance travel toward Deira.
- Site 3 in Al Quoz 1: Surface improvements and a 650-metre bridge enhance traffic flow toward Jebel Ali.
- Site 4 at Ghadir Al Tair: A 640-metre bridge connects Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road, improving flow toward Deira.
- Site 5 at Jumeirah Village Circle: A new two-lane bridge and road expansions will serve traffic between Al Khail Road and Hessa Street.
RTA has already completed widening works at two key sites in Al Jaddaf and Business Bay, where an additional lane has been added to improve traffic flow by 2,000 vehicles per hour.
Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project
On 15th September 2024, RTA announced the opening of two additional bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project. The project aims to enhance the connection between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Al Asayel Street.
The first bridge, 601 metres long, handles 3,200 vehicles per hour and serves traffic moving eastbound towards Al Qusais. The second bridge spans 664 metres, ensuring smooth traffic flow by eliminating overlaps toward Jebel Ali Port.
Upon project completion in October 2024, the Garn Al Sabkha improvements will reduce travel time by 40% from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This will help shorten the peak-hour journey from 20 minutes to 12 minutes. Additionally, motorists heading toward Al Yalayis Street will experience a 70% reduction in travel time, cutting the journey from 21 minutes to 7 minutes.
These improvements further strengthen Dubai’s infrastructure, supporting future growth and traffic demands.
